w-inds’ 26th single, entitled Rain Is Fallin’ / HYBRID DREAM, was released on 05.13.09. The first A-side is a collaboration with G-Dragon, a member of Korean boyband BIG BANG.

Rain Is Fallin’ is a sleek dance song that G-Dragon brings his touch to. The song starts off with a hip-hop influenced instrumental before G-Dragon steps in for a rap section. He’s very good at delivering attitude and swagger and it’s no different here as he introduces the listener to the atmosphere of the song perfectly. The singing sounds pretty good with the music and the boys of w-inds sound pretty into it. The chorus is pretty good but there’s just something missing from it, holding it back from being amazing although it is pretty catchy. The third verse takes on a different sound and it sounds different from the rest of the song so it’s kind of a nice change of pace. Having G-Dragon rap in English and w-inds sing in Japanese provides a nice contrast that catches the listener’s ear. Rain Is Fallin’ is definitely the stronger A-side and it just suits the boys more.

HYBRID DREAM takes on a futuristic sort of pop sound. Opening up the song is a sort of futuristic instrumental that takes the listener into another world. After a few vocalizations, the boys jump into the first verse and provide some strong vocals. They sound very smooth and sleek, keeping the listener’s attention although the music could have been a little more complete in order to keep up with them. Instrumentally, the song stays in the same tone the entire time so it’s kind of hard to notice the entrance of the chorus but it eventually becomes noticeable. It’s nice but some sort of distinctive instrumental would have made more of an impact.

In order to promote the single, two PVs were made: one for each A-side. The PV for Rain Is Fallin’ is basically a dance video and they show off some great choreography. There’s not much to say since it’s just kind of a colorful dance video but one thing that can be said is that G-Dragon’s hair is looking really weird. He usually looks really attractive so it’s kind of a shame. The PV for HYBRID DREAM is also a dance video but it’s in black-and-white to contrast the other video. It has more of a cool feel to it and it suits the song very well.

Single Ranking: B +

w-inds does a nice job with this single. G-Dragon definitely spices up Rain Is Fallin’ and his raps really catch the listener in so it’s good they brought him in. On both songs, the boys have good vocals so hopefully they’ll stay consistent with that. In both cases, the instrumentals could have been a little stronger but they certainly are catchy and warrant a few listens at least.
