YUI’s 15th single, entitled It’s all too much / Never say die, was released on 10.07.09. It’s all too much was used as the theme song to the movie KAIJI while Never say die was used as an insert song.

It’s all too much is a cool rock track. The song begins with a dark rock instrumental that has a sort of mysterious feel to it. Then YUI comes in and her vocals are quite soft and fragile while carrying a sort of darkness to them as well that suits the music well. Her vocals aren’t too powerful on the chorus and don’t really emote as strongly as they could have to really make this section stand out like it should. It’s not a great song but it’s worth the listen at least once.

Never say die takes on the sort of rock sound from the first track but this time around, it’s higlighted by an upbeat cheery feel. Unfortunately, the end product isn’t anything to write home about. YUI’s vocals sound a bit more complimentary to the music but overall, the song just doesn’t engage the listener.

In order to promote the single, two PVs were made: one for each A-side. They both essenially featured YUI just rocking out with a band as she sings the song with a few other scenes to intercut. The Never say die PV features scenes from the movie.

Single Ranking: C

It’s just not a very interesting single that YUI delivers this time around. Perhaps next time, the instrumentation will have some more magic to it and suit her voice better.

YUI – again [14th Single]

YUIagain

YUI’s 14th single, entitled again, was released on 06.03.09. The title track was used as the opening theme for the anime series Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

again is a cool rock track. Opening the song is the guitar centered instrumentation and it has kind of a mysterious atmosphere to it that suits the anime series well. YUI’s softer vocals serve as quite the interesting contrast to the edgier music and catch the listener’s attention. She sounds great when she sings more rapidly and it only adds even more to the element of mystery. Things pick up a little on the hook when the instrumentation becomes more diverse and the vocals carry more edge to them. The pure instrumental section is really reflective of the song’s cool attitude and definitely stands out.

This single’s B-side is the calming number, Sea. The song begins with a very mellow and simple instrumental, accentuated by the guitar. YUI sounds very fragile and sweet on the first verse. There is an element of sadness that comes through the music and the tone of her voice. The chorus is a little dull in terms of changing things up from the verses but it’s nice nonetheless. It’s a nice song and takes on a different feel from the A-side so it’s good that we can two different sides.

In order to promote the single, a PV for again was made. The video features YUI rocking out with a band as the main scene. Another scene includes her standing in a crowd of people walking by, which really reflects the emotional context of the lyrics.

Single Ranking: B +

again is a very enjoyable track and really highlights YUI’s cool personality. Sea is also nice but a little on the dull side. Overall though, the single is pretty good and worth the listen.

YUI – I’ll be [New Song]

In order to promote YUI’s upcoming BEST album, MY SHORT STORIES, I’ll be is being promoted as the album’s new track. It was also used to promote Walkman’s “Play You” campaign.

I’ll be is a nice uptempo number. The song begins with the chorus. Her vocals carry a kind of cuteness at some points in fitting with the upbeat and fun instrumentation, driven by the guitar. One part that stands out is when she sings “I’ll be.” On the verses, her vocals sound a bit more cute and the music remains interesting. She sings “oh baby” on the verses and although short, it stands out to the listener the most. The pure instrumental section is nice as we get a nice spotlight on the guitar but it’s nothing fantastic. I’ll be is a nice song that shows YUI’s spirit and one the listener can catch.
