Otsuka Ai – クラゲ, 流れ星 [18th Single]

September 9, 2008 at 7:46 pm (Otsuka Ai) (, )

Otsuka Ai’s 18th single, entitled クラゲ, 流れ星, was released on 09.10.08. The title track was described as a “heartwaming ballad for summer” and it was to celebrate Ai’s fifth anniversary.

クラゲ, 流れ星 is a sweet ballad that Ai shines on. The song begins with a sweet piano instrumental and the string instruments really help catch the listener’s ear. Soon the first verse starts and Ai’s vocals are beautiful, capturing the song’s emotions perfectly. With the chorus, Ai’s vocals are still great and the instrumentation makes a more fairy-tale-like sound that really stands out. She holds her notes strongly and gives enough power to bring the emotions to the forefront. The pure instrumental section is fantastic and is certainly ear-catching. Overall this is another great ballad delivered by Ai with emotion and beauty to make it stand out.

H20 is the single’s first B-side. Opening the song is a nice upbeat pop instrumental, driven primarily by the guitar. Her vocals during the first verse are pretty strong and catch the listener’s ear nicely. As the verse goes on and the instrumentation momentarily becomes more varied before the chorus, it really sounds great and very addictive. On the chorus, she continues to bring powerful vocals which carry with the music well. The pure instrumental section is very enjoyable, spotting more of a coolness that falls onto the listener’s ears. H20 is definitely a great B-side worth checking out.

雨の粒, ワルツ ~LOVE MUSiC~ serves as the second B-side. A very romantic and pretty atmosphere comes through the beginning instrumentation and makes a nice transition into the first verse. Her vocals are very pretty and smooth here, really stirring feelings inside the listener. The chorus is gorgeous as Ai follows the direction of the music perfectly to solidify the song’s atmosphere. This is another great song that makes the single all the better.

In order to promote the single, a PV for クラゲ, 流れ星 was made. The video holds a simple beauty that the song evokes. Ai is seen playing the piano in the water as well as Ai wandering around under the beautiful night sky. It’s another great video and Ai looks very pretty.

Single Ranking: A –

Ai definitely brought a beautiful single. The title track is a great ballad that really communicates the emotions well as Ai’s voice captures the sorrow. H20 nicely picks things up and offers the listener with a little uptempo sound while still keeping that prettiness. Then the second B-side slows things again beautifully as there is a sweet feeling that comes through. This is an excellent single and definitely worth listening to.

She finally comes up with something decent! The last time she did was like CHU-LIP. D:

This song is so Renai Shashin X Planetarium. ❤

I feel like this single kinda went back to her older sound, which is what I would prefer such as Kingyo Hanabi. So I would love if the new album would continue this type of sound on the next album 🙂

this’s 1 heck of a great single & it’s more of a fitting comeback for her unlike Rocket Sneaker / One x Time .

Frankly her B-sides are not that outstanding but I must say that I really like 雨の粒, ワルツ ~LOVE MUSiC~

I agree!!!! I like it more here than on the LOVE COOK album!
And yes, this is a much better single than Rocker Power / One Time. I knew she had it in her to bring something great!
Can’t wait for the album 🙂

Otsuka Ai is a great artist. I remember seeing her song Sakuranbo on Japanese TV on my very first day in Japan a few years ago. I though, “What a weird, funny, and lovely voice!” And every since, I’m sort of a fan of hers. Otsuka Ai is one of a kind!
